The Belize Zoo houses over 150 animals representing nearly 50 species, all native to Belize. The zoo has never taken an animal from the wild. All of the animals at the zoo were either orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated or sent to the zoo as donations. There are a variety of mammals living in the zoo, including Belize’s national animal, the Baird’s Tapir. Other wildcat species found in Belize are the jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi. Visitors will also see a variety of reptile residents including crocodiles and boa constrictors. There are several activities offered at the zoo to make your animal encounters even more exciting. Watch the nocturnal animals come to life in the zoo after dark on the “Nocturnal Tour.” See the animals in the wild during the “Savannah Nature Trail Tour,” which meanders through the pine savannah.
