This week we feature some exciting destinations for the winter and holiday season. Want to get out and leave the area for the holidays? Interested in experiencing someone else’s traditions and exposing the children to some exciting culture over their winter school breaks? Look no further as we have rounded up some wonderful and exciting winter destinations both in and out of the country for everyone in the family, kids to adults, to enjoy.
All the locations featured in this spotlight have special and distinct winter season traditions. They celebrate the festivity of the season: its holidays, sports, art, food, nature and life. Consider these a celebration of winter, as well as a celebration of holidays both well known and specific to certain areas.
Why You Should Consider Traveling Around the Holidays
The same sights, with a different spin. While it is tempting to run to warmer climates in the winter (and we’ll never knock a beach vacation) there is something special and magical to a snow covered winter morning. You may think that things won’t be open or you’ll miss out on a destination because of winter but this isn’t always the case. In this day and age more and more places can be open year round, and while some things will be inaccessible in the winter, there are others that are only open this time of year. With all these destinations don’t consider it a compromise, you gain as much, if not more, than you lose.
There is more to winter than just skiing…but why not do both! These days are all in or near locations with famous skiing conditions and are great for active families. At the same time, it can get boring to do the same thing everyday and there is no reason you can’t mix in a little education and culture with your winter sports. Take a long ski trip and break it up with one of these days in the middle. Alternately, you can break up these days and enjoy a single activity for a quiet afternoon after a morning of hitting the slopes.
Winter is a time to be together. The cold temperatures conjure images of families huddled together for warmth, while holidays make us think of large gatherings and great meals. Use the winter season to bring your family closer in more ways than one. These days create great memories through learning experiences, theatre, impressive views and shared dives into local culture. Experience someone else’s winter holiday for a unique experience your family can share as their own special bonding moment.
Our Featured Days in Winter and Holiday Locations are as Diverse and Inspiring as the Countries that Hold Them!
First up is amazing Lyon, France. This stunning city is host to it’s own “Festival of Lights” each winter which provides a unique spectacle. Your family will also enjoy learning and experiencing local culture, as well as some holiday shops and food that cater towards the big winter holidays we all think of.
Next up is stunning Aspen, Colorado. For winter fun within the country, head to one of the most famous ski areas there is. However, we show you that especially around the holidays, Aspen celebrates art, culture and great food as much as it does amazing ski conditions.
Finally we arrive in Sapporo, Japan for a wonderful dose of culture and the home of the Sapporo Snow Festival. Your family will love celebrating winter as it explores how Japanese frontiersman lived and marvel at the history and accomplishments of winter athletes before warming up with some delicious ramen.
These itineraries can be followed exactly for very realistic family days that are “doable” with children in tow. Or, if you like you can use them as a starting point and a handy guide to a few choice attractions in each location. The choice is yours.
