Description: Akana Falls State Park is home to more than one of the waterfalls in Hawaii that provides stunning views, and Akana Falls is considered by many to be the most popular waterfall in the state. This waterfall tumbles off the cliff and drops down more than 440 feet into a gorge, and the experience of this waterfall is unforgettable.
Our Experiences: The thunder of the water, the mist created by the force of the flow, and the exquisite views all make this one of our top picks for waterfalls in Hawaii. The hike up the trail leading to Akana Falls offers some gorgeous foliage and lush vistas, and even a peek at another waterfall along the way. Once we reached the top of the looping trail the view that we experienced made the hike time well spent. This is a must see stop that all ages will enjoy.

Description: Kolekole Beach County Park is located about 13 miles from Hilo. This park is very popular with the local residents, and it can be a little crowded on the weekends. There is a large grassy area for kids to play in and people to relax on, and there are several amenities for visitors to use. A waterfall and stream that come from Akana Falls runs through the park and there are restrooms, picnic tables, and pavilions for visitors to use. Swimming and fishing is allowed and enjoyed by locals but visitors need to be aware of microorganisms in the water that can cause medical problems, including Giardia and Leptospirosis. The mouth of the river in the park has a rocky bottom and the current can be very strong. Some of the locals use this spot for surfing but this is not recommended.
Our Experiences: This park is situated under a bridge, and it was incredibly beautiful. The kids loved running through the grassy area and marveling over the stream and waterfall. We did not go swimming here but we did spend some time enjoying the scenery and the peaceful outdoor setting. The pavilions provide some needed shade during the hottest part of the day, and the restrooms were rustic but clean. This is a nice place to stop and spend some time, and our family enjoyed the spot very much and would recommend this park to others. One of the waterfalls in Hawaii can be found here but do not expect anything like Akana falls, it is just a small waterfall that is delightful without being large or excessive.
