Months Visited: August
We enjoy luxury vacations but we are not afraid to get dirty or travel off the beaten path when this is called for. We prefer luxury hotels but are also willing to rough it at times. We love adventure and are willing to search to find out of the way spots and unusual local customs and cultures. We prefer a mix of things, including hiking, museums, local markets, and other interesting activities ideal for families with children.
Our children at the time of this itinerary: 5 children- Boy age 8, Girl age 8, Girl age 8, Girl age 4, Boy age 1
Hours: Varies depending on company
Website: Numerous operators and tour companies to choose from
Admission: Cost starts at $150-175 per person
Description: An adventure tour that includes a zipline experience, hiking, and kayaking can be a great way to explore the area and enjoy the natural tropical beauty of Hawaii. Some tours include waterfall swimming, some may also include a wagon ride, and there are other possibilities that can be found as well.
Our Experiences: We took an amazing tour which included a zip line, a kayak down a river, and beautiful hike through gorgeous scenery. Everyone had a great time and this stop is highly recommended by everybody in our family. Our two youngest children could not zip line, and while they were disappointed with that they did enjoy everything else. At the end everyone (except the very youngest) got to do a mini zipline with a drop into a waterfall, which was a favorite for all of us.
Address: South Shore of Kauai, Hawaii
Description: Poipu Beach Park offers nice snorkeling due to unusual formations of reef and an abundance of marine life in the area. This beach is usually rated as one of the safest to use but the water conditions can change quickly.
Our Experience: The area is very rocky, and there is good snorkeling here but it is not the best in Hawaii. We had a fun on this stop but the beach was not as nice as some that we saw elsewhere on the island. This was among the better snorkeling spots. If you are in the area for a few days it is worth going here. Go if you have the time.
Website: Several to choose from
Admission: Several to choose from
Description: Enjoy Hawaiian culture at it’s very best, with traditional music, dances, games, and other forms of entertainment. A luau is also about food, with numerous traditional recipes being served to guests. Sometimes a whole pig is roasted in the ground, and many of these events offer authentic flame dancers and other forms of traditional entertainment that plays a big role in the culture of the Hawaiian islands.
Our Experiences: We attended a luau while we were in Hawaii. The one that we went to was very touristy (most are) and cliché. In spite of this we all enjoyed it a lot and lots of fun. The dancers and flame acrobatics were great and enjoyed by all the kids.
