Months Visited: August
We enjoy a variety of activities and settings. Sometimes we want to explore remote places and learn about unusual cultures, and sometimes we want to experience scenic vistas and sunsets on the beach. Educational stops are important but we also want to spend some of our time together having fun and doing exciting things. Comfort can be a plus but we can give this up and go with the bare basics at times if a stop is off the beaten path as well. Our children at the time of this itinerary: 3 children-Boy age 18 years, Boy age 13 years, Boy age 11 years.
Description: Horseback riding is a popular activity in Hawaii, whether you choose to ride on popular Hawaiian beaches or along the ocean bluffs and cliffs there is plenty of things to see and explore. A horseback ride along an ocean bluff can provide dazzling views of the coastline and the ocean, and this can be a relaxing way to enjoy the best of Hawaii and spend time together as a family.
Our Experiences: We decided to take the family on a horseback ride, and we chose to ride along the ocean bluff. There are a number of stables that rent horses that you can choose from and most offer hourly rates, and guides may be available on request. There are trails that run along the ocean bluff that we followed, and the kids found this stop very exciting. We all enjoyed the views and the leisurely pace, and the horses that we had were well behaved and friendly. This is a good way to spend a few hours and see some of the more remote areas of the island. The stable that we used had an age requirement of 8 years old so all of our kids were old enough to go on this ride. Families with younger children may want to choose a different activity instead.
Description: One of the popular Hawaiian beaches that many people enjoy when they visit Kauai, Hawaii is Hideaways Beach. The official name for this beach is Kenomene Beach but it is also called Pali Ke Kua Beach sometimes, and it is a top pick during the summer months. During the winter the water here may be rough, making swimming difficult or impossible, but in the summer and early fall the water is typically calm enough to make this a great spot for snorkeling and swimming. There is a steep path that is used to reach the beach area, but once you arrive the sandy beach is secluded and is usually not crowded at all. Sea turtles seem to enjoy this area as much as people do, and the golden sand is soft and smooth.
Our Experiences: In order to get to Hideaways Beach we had to use ropes and handrails in order to descend to the beach, and this does involve some steep drops in places. There was sufficient parking above the beach path, and once we reached the beach we all thought that the climb and short hike was worth it. The water was very inviting, and there is a large rock but we stayed away from it while we were in the water. This beach is somewhat secluded and remote, which is just how we like them, so this was a top rated stop for our family.
