The type of vacation we typically choose is luxury. For our activities, we like luxury and often stay at the finest hotels, but we are also adventurous and love off the beaten path types of experiences and always seek them out. We aren’t bothered by very “local” experiences anywhere and think these are very important to our vacation. We love adventure. We also like a mixture of regular, touristic and organized places. We enjoy hiking and outdoorsy activities. We enjoy museums, markets and other activities geared towards children. We like to maximize each day by seeing as much as possible.
Our children at the time of this itinerary: 5 children- Boy age 11, Girl age 11, Girl age 11, Girl age 7, & Boy age 4.

Description: The Flam Railway takes passengers on an exciting adventure by train. As the locomotive travels along the designated route the scenery outside the train includes many waterfalls, including the Kjosfossen Waterfall, steep mountains, and deep valleys. This is considered one of the steepest railway lines in the world, and it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Norway.
Our Experience: Our journey on the Flåm Railway lived up to the reputation as one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world. Kids and adults both really enjoyed this journey. The train stopped at the the mighty Kjosfossen Waterfall for about 10 minutes so that we could get off and take pictures. The kids really liked seeing this. Although we took the train in both directions, some people biked and/or hiked back, which seemed like an interesting alternative although you need to allow extra time for this. If we had enough time, I think that would have been a very nice thing to do. This is a very popular train ride and I highly recommend that you book in advance in order to ensure that seating is available when you plan your trip.

Description: The Stegastein Viewpoint looks out over the entire area, and the village of Aurland can be seen very well. The fjord view is also beautiful, and even the ride to get to the viewpoint is gorgeous.
Our Experience: We are normally not bus tour people, but it is not so easy to get around with a family of 8 in many parts of Norway. Limited and expensive taxis are difficult and costly, and rental cars are both scarce and usually prohibitively priced. So we took a 90 minute bus tour to the Stegastein view point, which is approximately 650 meters above the village of Aurland and the fjord. We had a terrific view of the scenery, both on the bus and from the viewpoint itself. The kids and adults enjoyed this trip and thought that the views were spectacular. If you like beautiful scenery and hair pin turns, it is worth going on this.
